The boats are a uniform design, length minimum 3.8m to 4.1m, width 1.7m and minimum weight 75kg. Motors are Yamaha or Tohatsu 50hp outboards, with minimal work allowed on them and they are scrutineered at each event to ensure they are compliant to the rules.
There are no fire proof race suits, aircraft-style seats or cock pits to stop you smacking the water. Just grab a rig, approved life jacket and helmet, then turn up to an event. This all means it is not the biggest budget that wins races, it is the best team. Hitting the water with a fully spec’d competitive rig could cost as little as $10,000 NZD.
